In an investigatory report by The Today Show this week, rental cars were tested for cleanliness and the presence of harmful bacteria you may be exposed to when renting a car.
The tests were conducted in Miami, Florida. Miami is the leading car rental state in the country. Six rental car companies were used in their investigation. A certified lab inspected six different vehicles, took samples and a team of Micro Biologist conducted the tests.
Samples were taken from the steering wheels, Door handles, gear shifter, child seats, window switches, and the radio control knobs.
Of the six cars tested, four of them tested high for bacteria including stomach and flu viruses. Harmful bacteria was found on the door handles, gear shifter, steering wheel and window switches. Two of the cars had the dangerous Strep Virus found on the tested child safety seats. Inspectors called the results alarming.
The overall condition of the cars tested was poor. There were crumbs in the cup holders, Sticky residue on the dash and doors, even one Mini Van had vomit on the floor board.
As reported, most rental cars are not inspected by upper management before hitting the lot, so buyer beware! The best solution for those renting cars, bring some disinfecting wipes with you. Wipe down the key areas noted and if you need a child seat, bring your own.
